Night One of Three

So Jayden had his 6 month doctors appt. yesterday. We are blessed that Jayden is healthy and happy. He weighs 20 lbs. is 30 inches long and his head size is off the charts. The doctor comforted me by saying that it is perportional so I shouldn't be worried. The whole time I was thinking of the movie, So I Married an Axe Murderer where he makes fun of his sons head by saying it is like a grapefruit on a toothpick.
After the weigh in she asked me about Jayden's sleeping habits. He has been waking up twice in the night since he was about a month old. He is hungry, we feed him, and then he goes back to sleep. Well, the doctor told me to look at him and said that his eating in the night has no value, he is getting up out of habit. She then gave me orders for the next three nights. On night one when he gets up we are supposed to let him cry for 20 minutes. She told me to set a timer to make sure I didn't go in his room when it "seemed" like 20 minutes. Then I am supposed to comfort him then leave. On night two I am supposed to wait 30 minutes then only go half way in the room and let him hear my voice to be comforted. The third night I wait 40 minutes then open the door, don't go in the room, but send my love from the door. She looked at me and made me promise to do this and said by day four we should be sleeping through the night.
OK so night one was tough. He woke at 11:30 and cried for about 45 minutes then he woke again at 3:00 a.m. for about 1 1/2 hours. He then woke up for the day at 6:30 a.m. because he was hungry. We both followed the rules and he survived and actually smiled at us this morning so he doesn't have a good memory yet. I am so tired this morning I almost fell asleep in the shower. A gal from Head Start came over today and said that she normally sees me so put together and liked seeing this side of me. I don't know to take that comment but told her this was one of those days that mothering was kicking my behind.
So we will see how tonight goes and report tomorrow. We WILL succeed and hopefully be blissfully rested parents a week from now, isn't that how it works? Will the stars align for us? Hopefully we will survive night two!

Underwater Basket Weaving

So this post is for my good friend Nicole. She laughed so hard when I told her what I have been doing to occupy my time that she told me I had to blog this. I had a teacher in High School that used to say that we needed to do well in school unless we planned on taking underwater basket weaving in college.

Well, it took over 10 years and living someplace where I was looking for things to do. I recently took a class in Philippi that taught me how to make a basket. I think it turned out well, but I understood the irony as I was doing it. It was actually pretty hard to make and took a lot of patience. I gave it to my Mother for her Birthday. Nicole hasn't seen pictures but I am sure she will be so jealous that she will try something that will make her just as cool. I am totally a nerd :)

Jayden

We wanted to show everyone that Jayden is getting quite the personality. The far left picture is of him in the Jumper. He LOVES the jumper and I get this look when I try to take him out. Go figure. The other picture is of him swimming in the hotel pool when we went to Columbus. At first he was a little scared but as you can tell, as soon as we spiked the hair the attitude and fun came along with it.

Today was branch conference. We had so many people there today, it was awesome. We had a pot luck afterwards and got to hang out with everyone. We have an elder going home on Thursday so we had to give him a memorable send off.

Summer break in Ohio

Colby had summer break this week and we were planning on going to Virginia Beach but it didn't happen. I got sick and then the rain just kept coming. So instead we rested and I planted some flowers in pots and we went to the Columbus, OH temple.

It was a lot of fun. We got a great deal on an awesome hotel. They had a kitchen and everything. My most exciting moment was that they had two T.V.'s so that I could watch what I wanted while Colby was watching the Jazz game. My sincere empathy to Jazz fans out there, Colby is taking it pretty hard (esp. since it was the Lakers).

We went to separate sessions on Saturday morning and then afterwards went to this great custard ice cream chain. Colby says it was flipping good. It reminded us of the place in St. George, UT. So it is a small world. We are in the temple and Colby sees a buddy from High School. Eric Sutherland is going to dental school in Ohio and we happened to go to the same session. That was fun.

Jayden can now sit up on his own. It is a big step for him because he only ever wants to jump and stand. We thought he would skip this step. He is so much fun, he laughs and plays and just is a happy baby. We sure love him like crazy. I was planting flowers the other day and after I was done I noticed a brown spot on my pants. Colby asked me what it was. I said it is either chocolate, poop or dirt. He dared me to taste it, I told him those days are over and just changed my pants. :)

Democrats for a day

It is hard to see but on Wednesday our former President Bill Clinton came to little Philippi, WV. Our primary is on Tuesday and so Hillary still feels that she has a chance if she wins WV. There were about 200 people there in the small gym. We couldn't resist. The part you can't see is that to the right of us were secret service (they are some big dudes). Colby kept making comments that were not good at a democratic rally and I had to make sure he knew he had to keep quiet. Luckily we are still alive :)

Tonight we had the elders for dinner and it was a lot of fun. They need a lot of support because the area is so small. One is from Spanish Fork, UT so it is a touch of home.

Circus, Circus

We went to the circus and it was fun. Jayden loved the dogs who did tricks. It was a small circus and pretty costly to get in, but fun. I am so glad Jayden is small, they were pros on trying to sell kids some of the circus toys and "stuff". Jayden didn't know what he was missing.

We had the funniest experience yesterday. We have a pond by our apartments and there is a family of geese that live there. If the family of babies are by the road, the male geese tries to protect his babies and will chase after your car. It is the funniest thing. On our way to church yesterday he tried to chase us down. I was laughing so hard, I am going to get a picture next time.

I went to the grocery store the other day in Philippi, it is a small store but is great for emergencies. I had what I call a West Virginia moment while I was there. When I drove in there was a horse and buggy parked in one of the parking spots. I thought that was different because we don't have any Amish in the town that I am aware of. They have a community a 1/2 hour away. As I came out of the store with my stuff, I saw two teenager boys dressed in jean shorts jump in and take off down the road. After the initial shock, I learned that I should have never complained that I had to drive an old suburban when I was younger. I also wonder if the trend will spread because of high gas prices. Colby thought it was cool and says we should get one!

Happy May Day

We are back in West Virginia and it is good to be back. Spring is awesome here and I have been going on walks like crazy. The flea market opened in town and the owner lady has a side ponytail and wears spandex. No spandex when I saw her last (count your many blessings) but ponytail still there.
Colby is in finals week. I don't see him much but me and Jayden are going to the traveling circus tonight. It will be fun, hopefully I get some great photos.
